FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 25, 2011) – Governor Steve Beshear today announced the expansion of Clopay Plastic Products Company Inc. in Bracken County. The global leader in specialty films, extrusion coatings, custom printing and engineered laminations will add 62,000 square feet to its Bracken County facility. The expansion will also secure the jobs of 290 workers at the plant.

“Job retention is a vital part of economic development, and the expansion of Clopay in Augusta will ensure 290 people remain on the job,” Gov. Beshear said. “The Commonwealth is delighted that this longstanding corporate citizen is making critical investments in its Kentucky plant and will continue to provide a positive economic impact on the Bracken County community.”

Clopay, Bracken County’s largest employer, produces a variety of products used in the hygienic, healthcare, protective apparel and industrial markets. Construction at its existing 289,000-square-foot facility, as well as the addition of new equipment will result in a total investment of nearly $12.3 million.

“This project would not be possible without the support of the city of Augusta, Bracken County and the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” said Vance Greene, Clopay’s director of operations for North America. “Clopay very much appreciates that support and looks forward to making this expansion a success.”

To help make this project possible, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) approved a $500,000 Economic Development Bond grant to the city of Augusta for the benefit of Clopay Plastic Products Company.

“Clopay has been a big part of Augusta for over half a century,” said Bill Norman, Clopay’s general manager for North America. “Today’s action by KEDFA is one very big step that will pave the way for Clopay to go forward with this important project in Augusta.”

“Clopay has been one of the leading community employers in our area for a number of years, and I’m thrilled to see that commitment continue,” said Sen. Robin Webb, of Grayson. “I am proud to support the company in this expansion and wish to acknowledge the quality work force of our area that enables such an investment. This is great news for Bracken County and the surrounding area.”

“This is truly great news for our community and the region as well and could not come at a better time,” said Rep. Mike Denham, of Maysville. “I’m very happy to see Clopay Plastic Products take this step and that the state could play a role in helping to preserve the 290 jobs that are affected by this decision. This has been a cooperative effort at the state and local level, and I want to thank everyone who has participated.”

“Over the years, Augusta has witnessed Clopay’s growth, and along with that growth, Clopay has brought new opportunities for Augusta,” said Augusta Mayor John Laycock. “We are now looking forward to this again. We are so happy that Clopay Plastic Products has chosen Augusta for its latest major expansion. Clopay has been a valued corporate citizen of Augusta since 1955 and it is our wish to continue this relationship for many more years.”

“Clopay Plastic Products Company is a vital member of the Bracken County community, and I am pleased that they have elected to expand their operation in Augusta,” said Bracken County Judge-Executive Earl Bush. “I would like to thank Clopay management, the city of Augusta and the Commonwealth for all their efforts and cooperation in making this expansion a possibility.”

The Louisville Zoo will soon have two polar bear cubs who call Glacier Run home. In early Fall Siku, a two year-old male polar bear cub from the Toledo Zoo will join Qannik, the seven month-old rescued Alaskan cub, and Arki, an adult female polar bear, along with the grizzly family of Inga, Otis and Rita. Siku’s name means “ice” in the Iñupiaq language and was chosen by schoolchildren on Alaska’s North Slope. Qannik’s name means “snowflake” in the Iñupiaq language and was also the name of the ConocoPhillips Oil field where she was found.

Upon Siku’s arrival in Louisville he will be off exhibit in a private den with an adjacent pool and play area for a standard 30 day quarantine, a typical period of isolation from other animals, restricted access to the public, and intense health and behavioral monitoring by keepers and veterinary staff before he goes into the exhibit rotation with Qannik and Arki. Polar Bears are solitary in the wild so there is no plan at this time to exhibit the bears together. Viewing status updates on both Qannik and Siku will be available on the Zoo’s website at www.LouisvilleZoo.org.

Siku’s placement at the Louisville Zoo was a key factor in Operation Snowflake, the collaboration between Alaska Zoo and Louisville Zoo, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Polar Bears International (PBI) and UPS that placed the rescued cub, Qannik, in Louisville. The determination was made because both the physical and psychological needs of both cubs could be met in Louisville. “It is a little sad when our animals leave,” said Dr. Randi Meyerson, who was instrumental in the decision making process. Myerson is the Toledo Zoo’s Curator of Mammals and the Coordinator of the Polar Bear Species Survival Plan (SSP), one of the AZA’s cooperative breeding management programs, “But the Louisville Zoo’s new Glacier Run bear habitat is an excellent facility with a lot of space, flexibility, animal-training and enrichment options. Siku, Qannik and Arki have a promising future there. They will play an important role as ambassadors for polar bears in the wild, and help inspire the public to decrease their carbon footprints.”

The Zoo hopes eventually to breed Siku and Qannik, but no formal plans have been made at this time. Qannik being a wild born bear would add an important genetic diversity to the captive polar bear population.

The bear habitat of Glacier Run, the Louisville Zoo’s newest exhibit, opened in April 2011 and shows the Zoo’s commitment to the species in both the facility design and programming. The Louisville Zoo worked closely with PBI in the process of designing and building Glacier Run and through this partnership the Zoo has been designated as an Arctic Ambassador Center. Designed as an imaginary town on the edge of the arctic wilderness, Glacier Run is modeled after Churchill, Canada, the polar bear capital of the world and a place where humans are learning to co-exist with wildlife. The exhibit offers spectacular views, captivating stories of the arctic and unique opportunities for close-up encounters with the magnificent and iconic polar bear, as well as grizzly bears, seals and sea lions. Guests can interact with zoo keepers, learn about current challenges to arctic environments and animals, and discover how incremental changes in our everyday activities and behaviors can make a difference for our planet and these magnificent species.

The Louisville Zoo, a non-profit organization and state zoo of Kentucky, is dedicated to bettering the bond between people and our planet by providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for visitors, and leadership in scientific research and conservation education. The Zoo is accredited by the American Association of Museums (AAM) and by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 23, 2011) – Governor Steve Beshear today announced Core Molding Technologies, a plastics molding company, will establish a new operating subsidiary and manufacturing location in Warsaw. The operation, which will support a significant new business venture outside the company’s traditional heavy truck customer base, will create 39 new jobs and entail a more than $3 million investment in the Commonwealth.

The newly formed subsidiary, Core Specialty Composites LLC, will manage the new business, which will occupy 62,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Gallatin County. The plant will initially produce large-scale, fiber-reinforced composite parts.

“Core Specialty Composites will make an excellent addition to the Gallatin County business community,” Gov. Beshear said. “The creation of nearly 40 new jobs will provide a significant boost to the community. I am confident that Core will find Kentucky’s workforce, available resources and overall business climate to exceed its expectations. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership for years to come.”

Products produced by Core are used in a variety of industries, including medium and heavy-duty trucks, automobiles, personal watercraft and other commercial products. The company, which has additional operations in Ohio, South Carolina and Mexico, plans to begin hiring in September with active production beginning in early 2012. A job fair for interested applicants will be held Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011 from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET at the Gallatin County Extension Office in Warsaw.

“We are excited about this expansion outside our traditional markets,” said Kevin Barnett, president and CEO of Core Molding Technologies. “For some time, we have been focused on growing our business with industries beyond our traditional heavy truck accounts, and this is the latest of several successes in that regard.”

Robert “Bob” Brennan, plant manager of the company’s Batavia, Ohio plant added, “We liked the quality of the labor market in Gallatin and surrounding counties. We worked closely with state and local representatives in our targeted regions, and the combination of benefits offered by the people and officials of Kentucky and Gallatin County convinced us that Warsaw was the best location for our new operation.”

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved the company’s parent company, Core Composites Cincinnati, for tax incentives up to $900,000 through the Kentucky Business Investment program. The performance-based incentive allows the company to keep a portion of its investment over the term of the agreement through corporate income tax credits and wage assessments by meeting job and investment targets.

“It is so important that we recruit businesses to the Commonwealth to help our families find good jobs in Northern Kentucky,” said Sen. John Schickel, of Union. “We should continue our support of business growth to help the employment market in Kentucky.”

“I’m really pleased that Core Specialty Composites has decided to locate in Gallatin County and create nearly 40 jobs as a result,” said Rep. Royce Adams, of Dry Ridge. “This will be a big help for the community and could not come at a better time. It’s further proof that our economy is getting back on a firmer footing.”

“Gallatin County is honored to have Core Specialty Composites in our community,” said Gallatin County Judge-Executive Ken McFarland. “We greatly appreciate the efforts put forth by our local, state economic boards, and look forward to a long-term commitment that will be profitable for Core, while providing needed jobs for our citizens. We indeed welcome Core Specialty Composites.”

“The city of Warsaw is very excited to learn that Core Specialty Composites will be locating to our town,” said Warsaw Mayor Charles French. “The company will be moving into a building that has been vacant for several years. The closing of the previous plant has put financial stress on the city, but this new business will help relieve that stress, as well as provide some much-needed employment to our area. The city hopes Core likes small town living as much as we do.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Aug. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — ZirMed®, a leading national provider of revenue cycle management solutions, announced today that it has been named for the sixth consecutive year to the 2011 INC magazine ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. Beginning with the INC500 and continuing with the INC 5000, ZirMed has become one of the few companies with such a record in the prestigious listing.

The INC 500/5000 is INC magazine’s annual look at the most important segment of the economy–America’s independent entrepreneurs. In a stagnant economic environment, median growth rate of companies on the INC 500/5000 remains an impressive 94 percent. This year, ZirMed is #177 on the ranking’s Healthcare Industry list, with an impressive three-year growth record of 118%.

“When a company is deeply and fully committed to its customers’ needs, good things happen. ZirMed has become part of a rarefied group of firms in the U.S. that has met customer needs over time,” said Thomas Butts, President and CEO of ZirMed. ”We’re very proud of the passion and dedication our employees have shown in attaining this recognition.”

Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, ZirMed currently serves over 100,000 providers including primary care physicians and specialists, therapists, medical transport services, home medical equipment providers, billing services and many others. The company’s Internet-based services cover the entire healthcare payment process from patient eligibility verification to claims management to online bill payment and check processing for patient payments, bringing efficiency to the entire revenue stream while improving cash flow, reducing error-based claim rejections, and shortening accounts receivable days.

With the majority of all new job creation in the U.S. coming from small businesses, the INC 500/5000 is a prescient indicator of the companies and industries that are driving the economy forward. Over the years, the INC 500/5000 has identified the next generation of world-class companies, with consumer electronics maker Vizio, Internet giant GoDaddy, rental car service Zipcar, and beverage maker Honest Tea all appearing on the list in recent years.

ZirMed, along with other INC 500/5000 winners, will be honored at the INC 5000 conference September 22-24, 2011 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. Complete results of the INC 5000 can be found at www.inc.com/5000.

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Aug. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — More than 500,000 jobs and countless state and local projects to modernize and improve transportation across the U.S. are in jeopardy, according to state transportation officials. At a news conference today, Susan Martinovich, director of the Nevada Department of Transportation and president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, along with several top officials of state transportation departments, sent an urgent message to Congress.

“We’re here today to sound the alarm,” Martinovich said. “Congress must take action by September 30th, or the federal highway and transit programs that support thousands of jobs in every state will shut down.”

Martinovich and others attending the annual meeting of the Southeastern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials outlined two critical actions that must be taken by Congress before the seventh extension of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) legislation expires on September 30.

First, Congress must extend the 18.4-cents-per-gallon gasoline tax that provides the revenue to fund federal highway and transit programs. Second, it must pass a long-term reauthorization of those programs funded at the highest level possible.

“The federal government provides about $42 billion for highways and $11 billion for transit to states annually,” Martinovich said. “Sustaining this investment is imperative. Should Congress decide to reduce the program by one-third as some have proposed, it would mean the cancellation of hundreds of job-creating projects that are essential to America’s economic recovery.”

Mike Hancock, SASHTO president and Kentucky transportation secretary said, “Kentucky has $447 million in Federal-aid highway construction and repair projects ready for bidding over the next four months, so it’s imperative that Congress act to prevent the nation’s federal surface transportation program from expiring.”

The Kentucky projects include the next phase of the long-awaited and badly needed widening of Interstate 65, replacement of numerous deficient bridges, and rehabilitation of pavement on multiple interstate routes, including heavily traveled I-471 in northern Kentucky.

“We urgently need for Congress to pass a reauthorization bill – one that sustains funding at current levels and adjusts revenues for inflation,” Hancock said. “States need certainty. Effective planning is impossible otherwise. Without reauthorization, projects will have to be dramatically slowed, with a moratorium on new projects, because the state cannot carry federal-aid projects on its own.”

Federal highway funding is actually a reimbursement arrangement. States first put up their own money, and then are paid back by the Federal Highway Administration from the Federal Highway Trust Fund. Kentucky has 2,200 federal-aid projects already under way. Kentucky will bill FHWA for $72 million in reimbursements in October alone and $186 million for October through December.

Time is running out. When Congress reconvenes in September, it has only 11 legislative days to take action.

Martinovich urged state transportation officials across the country to communicate with their members of Congress during this month-long congressional break when members are back in their home states.

“There is so much at stake,” Martinovich said. “Commuters will sit in more congestion because new projects to expand lanes or make interchanges safer will not be built. Buses will be more crowded because fewer dollars will be available to repair and replace our aging fleet. The clock is ticking.”

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is the “Voice of Transportation” representing State Departments of Transportation in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. AASHTO is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association serving as a catalyst for excellence in transportation.

INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP) today announced the completion of its acquisition of CareMore Health Group. CareMore offers Medicare Advantage plans and Special Needs Plans designed for the chronically ill in select California, Nevada and Arizona markets. CareMore is distinguished by its unique service delivery model and Neighborhood Care Centers. The transaction was announced June 8 and has now been approved by regulators in each of CareMore’s markets.

“We are extremely pleased to finalize our agreement even sooner than anticipated,” said Angela F. Braly, chair, president and chief executive officer of WellPoint. “This means we can now focus on the most exciting part of the acquisition, which is expanding CareMore’s proven system of providing Medicare recipients with high-quality, personalized care that improves their lives and well-being.”

CareMore focuses on improving the health of its 54,000 Medicare members through a variety of means, including, most notably, 26 Neighborhood Care Centers staffed with physicians, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, podiatrists, physical therapists, nutritionists, psychologists and case managers. WellPoint is looking to expand CareMore’s model both within existing CareMore markets and to WellPoint markets across the country.

CareMore will remain headquartered in Cerritos, Calif., and becomes a wholly owned operating division of WellPoint.

“WellPoint’s faith in CareMore’s model really validates our work,” said Alan Hoops, who will remain as chief executive officer of CareMore. “We look forward to deploying programs like Healthy Start and our Neighborhood Care Centers to benefit more seniors as part of this larger organization.”

The transaction is expected to be neutral to WellPoint’s earnings in year one, as the company invests in the expansion of CareMore’s capabilities to more members, and accretive in years two and beyond.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Aug. 19, 2011) – Next Wave Systems, LLC, a contract engineering and technology firm, announced today that it will expand operations here, creating up to 60 new jobs by 2014.

Next Wave, which specializes in alternative energy software products and integrated defense security systems, will invest $330,000 to make facility and software improvements at its Bloomington facility. The company’s mapping, imagery and command-and-control software support the U.S. Department of Defense including operations at the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Crane.

“Indiana is a national leader in the defense industry and our emerging IT industry is gaining notice,” said Governor Mitch Daniels. “Next Wave Systems’ announcement will strengthen those industries and bring more high-paying and high-skilled jobs to Indiana.”

Next Wave Systems, which currently employs 30 workers in Indiana, will begin hiring additional engineering associates later this year to coincide with facility improvements.

“Indiana is our home and always will be,” said John Crady, chief executive officer of Next Wave Systems. “We are excited to continue expanding our company base in Bloomington, because it offers us so many outstanding benefits – a talented and well-trained workforce, a business-friendly working atmosphere and an exciting, personable community.”

Founded in 2005 and headquartered in New Pekin, Ind., Next Wave operates additional facilities in Merrillville, Bedford and Bloomington as well as a field office in Huntsville, Ala. The company increased its service offerings earlier this year by launching The Englehart Group, a strategic marketing and public relations operation based out of Indianapolis.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Next Wave Systems, LLC up to $500,000 in performance-based tax credits and up to $6,650 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans. The city of Bloomington initially approved additional property tax abatement.

“Next Wave Systems’ expansion in Bloomington benefits our community and the region, and it helps fortify NSWC Crane’s presence in Indiana,” said Ron Walker, president of the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation. “Agile technology companies like Next Wave and the skills they employ fit very well in Bloomington and greatly enhance our growing reputation as an emerging tech center.”

Next Wave’s announcement comes less than a month after Governor Daniels joined members of the WestGate Authority to break ground on the $8.8 million WestGate Academy at the WestGate @ Crane Technology Park.
