Southern Indiana named Business Retention and Expansion Program of the Year by International Economic Development Council
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – (October 7, 2009) – One Southern Indiana’s work with existing Southern Indiana businesses has earned the organization a 2009 Excellence in Economic Development Award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). One Southern Indiana has been named the Business Retention and Expansion Program of the Year for programs active for three years or more and within a population range of 50,000 to 200,000. One Southern Indiana accepted its award last night at the 2009 IEDC Annual Conference in Reno, Nevada.
“This is a wonderful honor for us and we appreciate this prestigious recognition by our peers in economic development,” said Michael Dalby, president and CEO of One Southern Indiana. “Since our founding in 2006, One Southern Indiana has worked hard to grow business in this region. We are driven by the needs of business owners and focus on connecting them to the right resources in steering them to the next level of growth and success. It is terrific to be recognized in this capacity.”
“From Lake Michigan down to the Ohio River, Indiana’s economic development partners work tirelessly to cultivate the best environment for business in their own backyards,” said Mitch Roob, Indiana Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. ”Congratulations to the One Southern Indiana team on your nationally recognized effort in growing jobs for our state.”
Since July 2006, One Southern Indiana’s economic development efforts have helped area businesses add $223 million in new initial capital and 4,909 net new jobs worth $170 million in new payroll annually to the regional economy. Most recently in 2009, One Southern Indiana has assisted in expansion and retention efforts for the New Albanian Brewing Company, VT Industries, Cook Compression, Flow International, and several more.
“Shortly after acquiring our Jeffersonville plant in December of 2007, we began our membership with One Southern Indiana,” said Andre Boom, plant manager with Krunchers!, Inc., a division of Snyder’s of Hanover, Inc. We were connected with their Business Retention and Expansion group who opened our eyes to opportunities we had no idea were available to us. Through their hard work, we have already received assistance in receiving a state training grant and local and state tax abatements. The Business Retention and Expansion group allows us to focus on what we do best, making quality kettle chips deserving of the Krunchers! brand name, while they do the leg work on finding resources to allow us to do it more efficiently. We are lucky to have One Southern Indiana on our side, willing to do whatever it takes to keep us successful in Southern Indiana.”
The IEDC is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to helping economic developers do their job more effectively and raising the profile of the profession. It is the world’s largest membership organization serving the economic development profession.
