GLI Awarded Grants to Develop the Next Generation of Workforce Talent

Funding for college-planning and internship programs aimed at increasing educational attainment and preparing future workforce

Louisville, Ky. – Greater Louisville Inc. – The Metro Chamber of Commerce (GLI) has been awarded two grants aimed at developing the next generation of workforce talent.  The grants focus on increasing educational attainment and connecting students to the business community.

“If we want to continue attracting and growing knowledge-economy jobs, we have to have the skilled, educated workforce these jobs demand,” said Joe Reagan, President & CEO of GLI. “These grants help move us closer to that goal.”

The WIRED65 initiative, which examined the needs of the 26-county region in talent, innovation and quality of place, awarded the grants. In collaboration with Higher Income Requires Education (HIRE) and Metro Louisville, GLI will use the grants to:

Strengthen Internships in the Region – Research has shown that robust internship programs help attract and retain the next generation of talent in American cities. The grant will help launch a comprehensive plan to assist businesses in developing successful internship programs and increase the number of interns across the region. New online tools, employer training seminars, and student and employer resources will be made available.

Fix the Pipeline – Dramatically increasing the educational attainment of our community is a top priority for our region’s prosperity.  The grant will help increase the number of students graduating from high school and completing higher education degrees by helping students learn about college and access the resources necessary to apply.  New and expanded outreach tools and educational programs will be launched as part of the initiative.

“One of the best things our community can do in a down economy is plan for the future,” said Reagan. “Investing in our students now will pay dividends for years to come, as our skilled workforce attracts investment, innovation and prosperity to the region.”

Greater Louisville Inc. is the metro chamber of commerce whose mission is to provide leadership on the initiatives that impact the success of our members and the prosperity of the entire community.
